Effective Delegation Frameworks for Managers
Introduction
A great manager is one who successfully delegates work appropriately. However, new managers often struggle with delegation due to various reasons:
- Feel guilty about delegating work, fearing it will burden their team
- Prefer to do work themselves or micromanage due to doubts about team's skills and work quality
- Randomly assign tasks due to lack of knowledge about proper delegation frameworks
Delegation Frameworks
1. RACI Matrix
Context: Suitable for operational projects that need clarity in roles and responsibilities.
Pros:
- Clear division of roles between those assigned tasks and those responsible
- Easier communication
Cons:
- Tends to be rigid
- Less suitable for rapidly changing project situations
2. RAPID Matrix
Context: Suitable for strategic and high-risk decision-making that requires close monitoring. Can be used for decision-making, while RACI Matrix can be used for execution.
Pros:
- Clear decision-making process, making it more effective and efficient
Cons:
- Being a sequential framework, it can potentially slow down processes if not managed flexibly
3. 5 Level Delegation
Context: This delegation approach considers the level of trust we have in team members. The higher our trust in them, the higher the delegation level.
Pros:
- Helps team members develop and increase responsibility gradually
Cons:
- Cannot be immediately applied to every context because even with high trust levels, in certain contexts we might not be able to give full autonomy
